Technology

Early appropriate treatment of infections is critical for good patient outcomes and to manage treatment costs.

Great Basin’s breakthrough approach to molecular diagnostics will provide simple, rapid, multiple-pathogen diagnosis of infectious diseases. Combining isothermal amplification with chip-based detection in a sample-in result out format, Great Basin has created a molecular diagnostics platform with distinct advantages over current technologies:

  • Speed. Our isothermal amplification system can rapidly amplify target nucleic acids to detectable levels, and our modified chip has excellent limits of sensitivity. These two innovations combine to deliver rapid test results (less than 60 minutes) even from small quantities of clinical specimens.
  • Information-rich. Great Basin has added a very powerful, unique and proprietary “hot start” technology—RMA (ribonuclease-mediated amplification)—which permits multiplex amplification.  Combined with a chip formatted to provide up to 64 answers per test, Great Basin’s technology can provide information-rich results.
  • Simplicity. We have designed our diagnostics system to require minimal hands-on time; a laboratory technician simply loads the clinical sample into our cartridge, inserts the cartridge into the analyzer and hits “start” to begin the process.
  • Low cost. A simple isothermal temperature control, a compact digital camera, and inexpensive, silicon chips combine with a simplified fluid handling to deliver a low cost, scalable diagnostics system.

Our technology is the right next step in molecular testing, providing an information-rich and affordable diagnostics platform for point-of-care settings such as physician office labs, small-medium hospital labs and other moderately complex laboratory facilities.

Our goal? To cost-effectively reduce time to diagnostic answer, resulting in reduced treatment cost and improved clinical outcomes for all patients worldwide.
